Background

In Uganda, smallholder farmers face a critical "delivery gap." Essential agricultural inputs and services are often unavailable or unaffordable in their local communities, leading to a significant loss in productivity and income. This gap is estimated to cost each farmer over $4,000 annually.

Objective

To design and implement a scalable, commercially viable last-mile delivery system that provides smallholder farmers with access to the products, services, and knowledge they need to increase their productivity and incomes.

From Aid to Enterprise: A New Commercial Model

Akeyo needed to transition from a grant-dependent 'aid' model to a self-sustaining 'enterprise' model. This required a fundamental shift in our approach, moving from providing free services to creating a commercial ecosystem where farmers are paying customers.

The Aid Model

  • Grant-dependent and unsustainable
  • Limited scalability and reach
  • Creates dependency, not empowerment

The Akeyo Model

  • Commercially viable and self-sustaining
  • Scalable and adaptable to new markets
  • Empowers farmers as paying customers

The Shift

Farmers as beneficiaries

Farmers as customers

NGOs as implementers

PSPs as service providers

Grants as funding

Revenue as funding

The Last-Mile Service Bundle

We developed a bundled service offering that combines agricultural inputs, training, and market access. This 'Trio' model is delivered through a network of local service providers, making it both accessible and affordable for farmers.

Breaking the Language Barrier

To effectively deliver training and support, we needed to overcome language barriers. We developed a system for localizing video content, making it accessible to farmers in their native languages.

The Bottom Line: Quantifiable Success

Four key performance indicators validate the Akeyo platform's financial sustainability and social impact.
